Under 26? Like going to the theatre? Christmas pantomimes to Lion King, I know I enjoy a good performance especially if I know the words to the songs! Theatre tickets will given away for free to all those under 26years old in England from February 2009. This won’t be a short-lived scheme like the Free Night of Theatre in the US but a long-term campaign running up until March 2011 in theatres across the country. Young children to teenagers to young adults from all backgrounds will get the chance to see free performances as long as enough is done to make them aware of this incentive.

This incentive has been organised by Department for Culture, Media and Sport and was announced by Andrew Burnham, the Cultural Secretary on 23^rd September 2008. The aim behind is to reach new young audiences to encourage engagement with the arts to increase attendance. DCMS believe that access to the arts is vital and can provide valuable experiences, change behaviour/attitudes and enhance academic achievement within children.

Personally I think this is a great idea…maybe because I am in the relevant age group so therefore I am eligible for this scheme and will make the most of this. However, this will be funded with £2.5million of tax-payer’s money; how many people will think this is beneficial and how many will think this is a waste of money during the current credit crunch?

Are PR degrees worth it?

Jed Hallam’s blog post ‘Are PR Degrees worth it?’ generated a mass debate prompting many to raise their voices and give their different opinions on public relations courses.

Wolfstar

America’s first African-American President!

Leaders from many international countries have been lining up to give Barack Obama a huge congratulations following today’s news of his successful US presidential campaign. I watched CNN live earlier today to see the campaign results/coverage and was amazed to see the huge amount of on-going celebrations from around the world. It is amazing to see how many people are ecstatic with the results and how an election from just one country can have such a global knock-on effect. One individual on CNN even claimed the Messiah had been brought to us.

This signifies a step forward and looking back on Martin Luther King’s speech ‘I have a dream’ nearly 45years ago this election shows a positive change in society. Now Obama has many obstacles to tackle such as the troops in Iran and the current economic crisis leading to global recession; he likened the situation to that of when Abraham Lincoln became president and also had many issues to tackle. Obama’s speech earlier asked US citizens to call on a new spirit of responsibility, to pitch in and to work hard.

With so much riding on his success and many people placing huge amounts of faith into US, global and personal lifestyle changes, will this be too much for one man to attempt to deliver? After all he is only human….only time will tell.

Wassssup Reunion

Obama’s campaign team have released some amazing videos on YouTube to raise awareness of the US election and encourage voters. A great deal of funding has gone into producing these elaborate tactics which have never been seen before using online social platforms to target individuals in a fun and playful manner. I think they have been cleverly put together and use fantastic new strategies to increase awareness using web 2.0 to generate WOM (word of mouth). This is a good example of using UGC (user generated content) for publicity purposes as usually PR is promoting a product/service however this is promoting ideology and politics – therefore no tangible item. It is used to put across beliefs and ideas to encourage voters to take pride in their country and get involved within the elections.

The Future of Public Relations: This is a really interesting video clip as the future of public relations is discussed and new tools are expected to be implicated into future services to expand the industry. It also touches upon social media and that journalism is slowly deceasing.

Have a look at this video. I found it absolutely hillarious but at the same time quite cringing. It brings the whole facebook culture into perspective and how a lot of the things we do online using social networking platforms we would never dream of doing in real life…therefore does it change our behaviour as well as our principles?

Hi – I am new to blogging and being as how I am a work experience student (part-time) at a consultancy who specialise in social media I thought it was about time I joined WordPress and discovered the reasoning behind the hype.

I am a fourth year PR student at Leeds Metropolitan University having taken the third year out on placement in the industry. I was lucky enough to gain valuable experience at Warner Bros Pictures helping out in the UK Publicity Theatrical Department. I had a lot of fun over the year at events such as junkets and premieres and I am currently finding the transition back to university very strange. Being our final year the work load has been piled on high we have hit the ground running… well running as fast as my little legs will take me.

I have been interested in social media and campaigns that focus upon using online PR methods for promotion since last year. My dissertation will be aimed at researching how the film industry uses social media and viral marketing to publicise new releases within the UK. This is an on-going project for the next year and therefore I shall be trying to expand my knowledge and understanding for social media and web 2.0 both at work and at home. I am looking forward to getting involved – hopefully it’s not all as complicated as it seems.
